Aquatic Plant Management

Before Management Program

After Management Program
Noxious aquatic vegetation is the most visible problem that pond and lake users encounter. Aquatic vegetation plays an important role in an aquatic ecosystem. Aquatic plants provide shelter for fish and other aquatic organisms as well as valuable oxygen. The goal of an aquatic plant management program is to control the undesirable vegetation without harming the desirable vegetation. AEC utilizes the latest management techniques to provide a well balanced aquatic ecosystem.

There are four main categories to control growth: mechanical, biological, physical, and chemical. AEC will work with you to determine the best management practice for your specific situation. There is no one method of control that is a cure-all for every waterbody. Each situation is unique and requires different techniques to obtain the desired results.

AEC will develop a management program that best fits the needs of your water body!

There are many different species of plants and algae. Visit our plant and algae photo gallery to identify what is growing in your waterbody!

BIOLOGICAL CONTROL
Left: Grass Carp
Grass carp are a common biological control for certain species of submerged aquatic vegetation. Grass carp do not prefer to eat algae or other emergent plants (such as cattails).

CHEMICAL CONTROL
left: Airboat Application
Algaecides and herbicides are widely used to control undesirable aquatic vegetation. The chemical control method can be a safe and cost-effective tool to control nuisance aquatic vegetation.

MECHANICAL CONTROL
Left: Mechanical Harvester
Mechanical harvesting is a common form of mechanical control. The harvester cuts the vegetation below the water's surface (like a lawn mower). This tool is primarily used on large lakes to control submerged aquatic vegetation.

PHYSICAL CONTROL
left: Pond Dye
Pond dyes change the water color to a shade of blue, green or black. Dyes minimize sunlight penetration to the bottom of the pond, which will help limit vegetation growth.
